It destroys you just the same as a gambling addiction or a drink addiction

It destroys you just the same as a gambling addiction, or a drink addiction. Yet Oscar Wilde’s genius went hand in hand with his vices. Without the vices that destroyed him he would have had no life, he might as well have been dead. Settled home life with Constance, as much as he dearly loved her, was never possible for him. The vices were what it was all about, and it was in the indulgence of the vices, and the consequent ecstasies, that the genius of the prose and the plays came. What nourishes us also destroys us. I am going to destroy my marriage, the most precious thing in my life, the miracle of my life. But I cannot live without my vices because that is no life for me.
